cracked expansion tank cap 700 1991

My father-in-law's 91 740 sedan B230F has a cracked cap at the coolant expansion tank.
The cap has formed cracks on all four sides (horizontally) where we would grip it. It really does not leak though...

The car has 45K original miles and has been garaged all it's life, beautiful.

Is this normal? I've never heard of this problem. Anything i should check that might have caused this? The expansion tank is the 'bubble' shaped one.

I already have a new spare cap to replace it.
