Overdrive probs with '86 240 200

I have a manual trans. 240 DL, and for the past month or so my overdrive isn't working. the shifter knob is loose and keeps popping off, but the overdrive wasn't working even before this happened. i am wondering what exactly needs to be done to fix this problem, and what the cost of this would be at a general mechanic...is this something i should go to a volvo guy about?
