240s and their 'automatic' shifting 200

I've had 3 240s, a 85, 91, and 89 all of which have been DLs. I've noticed on all 3 that while accelerating at around 35-40 mph if i let off the gas quickly and lightly the car will shift into the next gear. Why do they do that?
