Oil filter 900

Recently when I went to my Auto Zone store to buy an oil filter, the sales person commented on my selection of a Pure One (micro filter) oil filter as the correct oil filter when using a synthetic oil and changing it at 5,000 miles interval. He says that the normal oil filters are not designed to go 5,000 miles. Any truth to this or is he reinforcing my decision to buy the more pricer filter?
