Was given this '70 145S last fall and promised I would restore it. Otherwise it might have gone to the wrecker. Not cheap bringing dead car back to life.
Salient points of restoration:
1. Gas was super foul. Turned to tar in tank and would hardly drain from the tank plug. Took tank and radiator to radiator shop for boil-out/coating and recoring respectively. Found float in Weber DGV stuck to floor of float chamber with nasty gas-tar residue. Also it took a while to get fuel flow to carb secondary jets.
2. Brakes were pretty dubious so I decided to rebuild all around. Volvo has remanufactured calipers for about $100/pop, but this seemed like too much. After laborious process of rebuilding calipers, I'd wished I'd bought the reman units. Fortunately all housings and pistons were serviceable.
3. Front axle grease had turned to hard wax. With metal chips showing in grease, these got complete rebuild with Timken bearings from NAPA, and Redline CV-rated Moly grease.
4. Rear end looked like it never had an oil change in 33 years. Black carbon crust had formed on most non-wear surfaces, but gear tooth pattern looked good, so she got fresh dose of 85W-140 Delo w/ Moly. Almost tore into rear axle bearings, but friend says these are pretty robust. Rear is 4.30:1. That's quite a stretch from my stock 3.36:1 260Z diffy. Turns out to be very buzzy on the freeway.
5. Engine got copious doses of Marvel Mystery Oil into cylinder chambers. Upon first start-up she was only running on about 1-1/2 cylinders. I'd run 'er for a while to get 'er good and warm, then pull plugs and squirt a bunch more Marvel oil in. Did that 3-4 times. Now she's runnin on all cylinders. I'll reset valves and do another compression test to see.
6. Auto tranny hopefully will last a while to let me save up for a 4-spd/OD swap. Damn thing works, kinda-sorta, but it sure is annoying. Especially when it shifts from 3rd to 2nd going up highway grades at 65 mph! Maybe if I get the engine a bit more dialed in so she's making power like she oughta, then tranny wouldn't have such a hard time.
7. Did 3 100-mile commutes in 'er last week. Power is off. Mileage sucks at about 12-15 mpg. Obviously she's not quite there yet. Another round of work to include valve adjust, comp test, new spark plugs, ignition checks, and DGV float adjust, etc. is in the works. If all this goes well and power/mileage are still off, then I'll need to start tinkering with DGV jets.
QUESTION: On the 145, how do I relase the rear seat bench in order to fold it up so that I fold down the rear seat back ?? Neither 140 Owner's manual, nor Factory Service Manual show this. Can't find any obvious lever. There must be a trick !
Later all !
