Air Conditioning Conversion on 1988 240GL 200

Greetings:

A while back I did some posting and checking on converting my daughter's a/c from R12 to R134. The saga continues.

I purchased a conversion kit from Swedish Engineers - kit included new evaporator, condensor, expansion valve, o rings and oil. Unfortunately the kit did not come with any instructions (help?) so I contacted a friend about helping. He suggested we install a simple retrofit kit that included adapters and two 'cans' of oil (I believe this is what is called the cheapest way to go). After placing the adapters on the compressor he called to say he could not get his gauges on and could do no more. I then called another friend (son of the person I bought the car from) and he suggested putting in MP1024 (?). Claims it to be very similar to R12 but without the chlorine. Noting really needs to be done to the system with this.

Now for the questions - which is the best way to go? I don't know if Swedish Engineering will take the kit back (nothing but the main box opened) - is the conversion kit the best way? Any help on installation instructions for it? What about El Cheapo way - am I asking for trouble? Finally - has anyone heard of MP1024 and does it work?

Really appreciate the help and advice.

Thanks - Ted in Albuquerque

PS - 2003 crop of chile is getting ready - anyone interested in some chile pequin or chipotle?
