Windshield Washer 'T' 900

The "T" in my windshield washer line started leaking. (It's actually not shaped like a "T" but one line comes in, splits to two lines to go to nozzles on the hood.)
Anyway, I take it apart, and there's some type of valve apparatus in there. I studied it further, and came to the conclusion that there's no need for a valve in this thing! So I removed the tiny spring, the small plastic piece, and just epoxy-ed the thing back together. Seems to work great.
Am I missing something here, or were the engineers at Volvo just drinking too much Gluug that holiday season?
