Sometimes approx 5 mins after a cold start, say at the first red light, idle will suddenly surge to about 1200 rpm in Drive. If shifted into neutral, it can climb as high as 2200 rpm. Since I don't want to shift back into 'D' at this high rpm, I shut off the engine. The problem is that it doesn't start up again -it cranks but doesn't start regardless of pressing the accelerator. I generally have to wait 10 mins for a cool down before it'll start again. Cold start is never a problem.
If instead of shifting into neutral, the light turns green and I proceed to drive on, the surging at idle disappears as the car warms up and doesn't reappear again.
Ideas?
