Fuel Gauge woes 200 1986

My brick's fuel gauge ain't working anymore. For a few weeks, it cut out intermittently, then worked again, then quit, and so on, and now, it just plain ol' dont work. Could my troubles be in the wiring and/or traces of the gauge cluster? or do i have a faulty sending unit?
