I have a question about changing the fluid on my 86 240 with automatic transmission. I have read Bentley's which states that I should attach a clear hose to the return line at the transmission. I intend to break the line at the radiator (top line I assume and attach a home made contraption at that point rather than getting under the car). Old age I guess. Does any one know the fitting size for that return line at the radiator. What I'm looking for, I quess would be some sort of nipple that can be screwed into the radiator. Then I can attach a hose to it with a clamp. The hose would run down to my catch pan.
Also, is it necessary for me to first drain the transmission via the drain plug? Bentleys suggests running car with the drain hose connected. Stopping as soon as bubbles begin to discharge. Adding 2 quarts of AT fluid and doing this process 3 times. Then adjusting the fluid level a final time.
Is this the best way to change the fluid and is there any reason for me to drop the transmission pan to clean any sort of filter, etc? Any help or suggestions are appreciated. I love this site. I get better advise here than I even get from my wife.
