automatic transmission gear indicator 200 1983

On my 244 turbo the gear indicator is almost completely gone. (cracked, broken)
Does anyone know how to get it off and a new one on because the knob on the end of the shifter is larger than the indicator? Saw a new one on ebay a while back. Transmission have to be removed? Something extreme?

any help appreciated
