All 4 floor pans - carpets get soaked with water in winter / rainy weather? 700 1988

1988 740 GL Estate B200E.
Since owning this car for the last 3 years I seem to be plagued with all 4 foot wells being smothered with water during rain & winter.
No .. its not anti-freeze! I know cause I've tasted it, n' it aint sweet!

Some small evidence of wiper motor seal probably sometimes drips into centre of passenger footwell, but not enough to drench both front & back behind front seats.

This 245k estate has had some varying previous owners and it is evident that offside front wing has been replaced along with other body panels, plus the rear wing sides have a former Volvo dealers signwriting that has been sprayed over and can only be seen in certain light to one side at an angle!!!

Have partly cured problem by drilling 3/8" holes through all 4 floors, which allows for drainage and saves on the tide mark being created onto my shoes.

Car has recently sailed thru yearly MOT test - without a hitch, and no rust anywhere underneath - its wierd man!

Roof hatch sealing rubber is perished & goes green with mould at times.
So could this be the culprit, and if so, where do the drain tubes come out so that I can shove a compressed air gun up them?
Interior roof lining is stained by previous owners smoking, but does not feel damp anywhere.
Any Ideas Guys n' Gals
Keith.
