Brake Failure. 245 Gate rust. Transmission/clutch issues 200

alright, i recently bought an 87 245, it's from pennsylvania and has absolutely no rust (a rarity in maine/mass where i am). the driver's side bottom edge of the gate, however, has much more than just surface rust, it's bad.... there's no leaking inside the car, and i'd like any suggestions on remedies... that one is less urgent, but my other problem... i'd like to learn about. I got the timing belt/front seals replaced in Maine, and was driving back to Cape Cod the next day when, after some stopped traffic in Boston, my brakes almost completely died. I could push the pedal almost to the floor, and i don't know what the stopping power was like even then, as i couldn't clear 5mph. i puulled over and checked the brake fluid level, for lack of anything better to do, it was fine, so i got a vague, uninformed notion about the brakes overheating and decided to wait a few minutes. i got back on the road and they were fine, but they were out for about 20 minutes... any ideas?
Now this is just turning into a cyber check-up, but i am worried about my clutch and tranny. the transmission needs coaxing to get into reverse, and the clutch seems to slip if you (for instance) upshift into second and apply too much gas, the clutch seems to slip. alright, i've gotta go, any replies would be appreciated, thanx.
