Just when I thought I had seen it all. As part of my Flathood project, I replaced all the brake components (rotors, calipers, m/c, ss hoses). I have been unable to get a normal pedal since then. It's firm but very low. I use a pressure bleeder that has worked fine many times. Finally brought it to a local mechanic who has worked on it for days with no better results. He called last night with good news. The remanufactured caliper on the front driver's side was constructed with the correct inner half but the wrong outer half. The outer half was from a passenger's side caliper. They are identical castings with different fluid passages. The setup would fit but would be imposssible to bleed. You cannot find the mistake without removing the pistons or splitting the caliper. Maybe the casting numbers would give a clue. Problem solved for me but others might benefit from my painful experience.
