car dies 700 1985

I have a 1985 740 gle and the engine runs for several minutes and then dies or will run for 30 seconds and then dies.It always starts back up but what I noticed is before it dies it will usually rev up trying to keep running and then die. Just before it dies the tach will bounce up to around 5,000 rpm but the engine is not reving up this high. Hall sensor is saoked in oil so i am thinking the sensor is shot.

When key is turned on the tach does nudge up but only once and I thought it was supposed to nudge up 2 or more times?
