Standard exhaust on a 740 with the B230E engine

Does the car really need the three silencers? I was wondering if there is any power benefit in getting rid of one of them. I ask this since I lost my rear most silencer and on driving it, found it semed to have more power, and the noise level had changed very little. When I had the system replaced, the car seemed smoother, probably due to the exhaust being hung in all the right places again, but that little edge of acceleration had dropped off again.
Am I right in thinking the flow was improved with a silencer missing and the engine is not adverse to slightly less back pressure from the manifold?
