240 Won't Idle when Cold 200

My 87 240 has 240m miles and has developed a problem with cold starts. When cold the engine will start immediately but then idles down and dies. After doing this several times the engine will idle down, almost die, cough a few times then rev up again on its own. If I pump the gas pedal from the start the engine will stay running. After a few minutes it will idle on its own.
Any thoughts on what to check?
