what bulb for turn signal/marker light housing? 200 1981

What are the correct bulbs for the front turn signal/marker lights? I tried some 1156's that I had around, but they didn't seem to be the right fit (pins on side are at same level). I have one 1157 that is a good fit, but wasn't sure if dual filament bulbs were needed for both top and bottom.
