in tank fuel pump sock filter..... 700

Replacing the sock filter on an 88 740 turbo...I have the new filter and started to put it on , it is a very tight fit and I am having some trouble, mainly because I am scared I will rip the filter. Any suggestions on how to put the filter on without ripping or tearing it? perhaps a safe lubrication that will not damage the pump. Thank you in advance.
