Safely removing airbag to repair horn 200

Hi.I have a 1990 240 DL with a horn with a mind of its own. Some days when I use it, it works fine . But mostly it sounds a bit "low". Lately just barely touching the edge of the steering wheel near the horn pad edge and the horn sounds though almost in audible. I think there may be a connection problem under the horn pad/airbag. How can I safely remove this to check the contacts? Is disconnecting the battery enough?TIA
Nelson
