leakin a/c through the vent system 700 1990

i have a 1990 740 volvo with the original a/c system. about a month ago i noticed a white - smoke [odorless] coming from my upperbody vent system as the a/c was on full. I thought it was just the dust from the road that had gotten inside the a/c system. Then it stopped. this continued a few more times thereafter everytime the a/c was used.

today, the a/c just quit on me. no cold air at all. has anybody has the same problem b/4? where could the leak be coming from?

any response is appreciated.
