Adding alpine CD changer to CR-728 900 1991

Has anyone fitted an Alpine 6CD changer to a CR-728 or other CR-7*8 Volvo
radio head unit? I'm lead to believe I will need an FM modulator to make it
work as the head unit does not have a CD button nor CD controls on it. Will
the use of this modulator cause a reduction in sound quality from the CD's?
Would I be better off swapping the head unit for one from a later 940 that
has CD controls on it? Also can the Alpine changer read CD-R's and CD-RW's?
I could have bought a CR-814 unit but I found out that it's actually preset
for American radio stations (probably not much good in Oz). This unit would
operate a changer directly without the modulator. Any other advice anyone
could offer would be much appreciated.
