My 91 940 with a solid rear axle suffers from a clunk in the rear end. It
can be produced almost on demand by reversing a little then going forwards.
Just after the car starts moving forward again it almost always clunks. I
suspected the torque rod bushes but an independant Volvo mechanic believes
it's caused by, I quote "Star wheels." inside the differential. Apparently
these allow both back wheels to spin at different speeds, for example when
turning corners. He didn't say specifically what could be wrong with them
but I assume he just means they're worn or something. This sound rather
expensive to me and I wonder if he's trying to con me.
The rear bush on the bottom torque rod looks a little suspect to me. I can
move it quite easily sideways with a 1 inch pry bar wedged between the rod
and the diff housing. The Volvo dealer it use reckons there should be
almost no movement in them. Could this really be the cause? Should I have
this replaced first before tearing into the differential? The noise doesn't
really bother me but it is becoming more frequent.
Thanks for any advice.
