Cat Cleaning 200

Parting out couple of old 240's. Noticed the cat's are not cracked or corroded, however they are a little sooted up from what I can seee when I scope them. Has anybody used a liquid such has solvent to clean the soot out of them, or is this procedure somewhat discourged.
