I have a 1987 740 GLE. One hot summer day I parked on a steep incline facing down with 3-4 gallons in the tank. I started the car and backed up the car (now moving up hill, still facing down). I traveled 30 yards facing downhill. During this time my car sputtered and coughed as though fuel starved. But when I leveled off the car ran fine and so I refueled without incident. That was two weeks ago. Since that time I have tried to re-create the problem by driving with about one gallon of gas in the tank, parking downhill, etc. Starting up, idling. I cannot get the car to sputter anymore. I have listened for the in-tank fuel pump but hear nothing. I listened in the filler tube and near the outlet from the tank with a mechanic's stethascope. I hear nothing other than the main pump at mid car. Am I right in thinking that some 740's lack an in-tank fuel pump? A couple of days ago I changed the fuel pump relay, just because it was an easy thing to do. Any ideas? Why did my car sputter just one time? Also, since the car now runs flawlessly with one gallon or less in the tank does that indicate that the in-tank fuel pump is working? Or that it is not required? I have run the car with the fuel needle just at or below the red area on the fuel guage. The car runs fine now. I don't want to open the tank if there is nothing in there to fix! Any ideas?
