Wet Carpet No Longer Inexplicable! 200

Well, I took a closer look at some details after the last exchange on the wet carpet in the front seat area of our 1983 240GL. I haven't ruled out the windshield as a POSSIBLE source, but I found a hole in the carpet by the hump where the drive shaft runs to the back; and there was a hole in the floorboard there. So now the question becomes: is there a simple and effective (and cheap) way to (a) seal that hole and others and (b) retard the spread of corrosion?
