can I get my A/C colder? 700

I just got my 1988 740GLE B230F's A/C recharged with R12. After driving a couple minute on the highway, the temp drops down to 55F but after a minute or two at a stop, it jumps up to 65F. Compared to my newer car, it doesn't feel nearly as cold. What could be the problem?

Oh btw, it was 95F w/35% humidity outside when I took the readings.
