I've removed and replaced a few struts over the years, so generally know what I'm doing, (I think!). Well, as part of a front end job on my 88 745 GLE wagon, I decided to renew the upper strut bearings. So I did one side a couple of weeks ago and on re-assembly found that when turning the wheel lock to lock the upper rubber spring retainer was being alternately pulled and released by the spring as it turned against the new bearing - quite noisy. The car drove OK but I decided to remove it again today. I re-assembled VERY carefully and it is exactly the same as before. It's as though the bearing is offering too great a resistance to turning causing the spring rubber to turn in "jumps" so causing the noise. I would welcome any opinion on this as to how smooth or easy it should be and what I might do about it. I don't really want to remove it again.......TIA
