automatic transmission

For the past several weeks I have been trying to adjust the shift points on my 1988 740 turbo wagon using the kickdown cable adjusters. I have been pretty successful with the first shift but in order to get it to go from second to third it is still necessary to let up on the accelerator and then lightly step on the pedal again.

I checked the transmission fluid this afternoon and noted that the fluid level was above max. Could this be causing my problem? Should I drain and refill? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
