tranny trouble! 700 1988

Any help would be appreciated. The car (246K, auto) occassionally loses power, or hesitates, then resumes almost instantly. I was writing this off as a fuel delivery problem until I heard the clunk the other day...which for the first time has accompanied the power return. Clunks can only be bad news and I am wondering if anyone might know how bad this is, or has heard similiar noises and NOT had to re&re a tranny. Thank you.
