M47 2nd gear too tall 200 1988

After a year driving our '88 245, my wife and I independently came to the same conclusion. The 5 spd M47 gear is whack, we find ourselves lugging in 2nd. From a stop, it seems like we're reving 1st to much too get into a comfortable spot in 2nd. Or more of a problem, slowing to say 5 or 10 mph for a turn or something and having to lug back up to speed. Anyone out there have any driving hints? Should I be forcing it into 1st for "rolling" stops?
