starter not cranking, losing my patients with old brick 200 1981

currently my starter is not functioning, it seemed like the battery was dying when i charged it nothing, no lights dimming either. so i replaced the solenoid which clicked a few times and now nothing. i am guessing that it is the starter itself and to replace the bastard which is painfully placed. my real problem is that i purchased this thing not knowing a whole lot about volvos but having alot of mechanical experince on japanese bikes and american cars. after putting in a rebuilt tranny, rebuilt drive shaft, replacing all the vac hoses and o rings on the efi, new hoses thermo water pump valve cover gasket, then having the fuel pump make a load of noise replacing the in tank pump, fuses, filter and accumulator. my wife and i are saying what next? i bought it thinking it had 150k on it with a redone interior and a buitiful exterior to boot and found out someone turned it back 100k via carfax. should i sell this box before my wife is stranded somewhere surrounded by wolves?, or have i pretty much seen the worst or what should i expect next, i wouldnt' even mind doing a topend rebuild but all this nitty gritty crap is trying my patience and i am about to work it over with a baseball bat. i would like to see this thing give me a straight month of service before i go and do ball joints, radiator, and a/c. ironically i bought a 1970 cadillac as a project that looks like it has been in a swamp and it only need some fuses to be unstoppably reliable. is this payback because i made fun of my swedish friend's silly red horses his mom kept around the house? is this the curse of the red horse?
