BF-5500 Distributor Holding Fixture
Of the three 940s two of three distributor caps were heavily coated with oil. The third had just a light film of oil. All three oil seals had hardened sealing lips that broke with a little finger pressure. I had rebuilt two of these puppies by pounding out the pins using a block of wood. I would not, could not, do it again like that, and if I would have noticed that a tool was available I would have bought one a long time ago.
Material is 1/4 x 4" bar stock. A friend milled the hole and the two slots per the dimensions in the FAQ. Than the piece was cut across the radius to expose a half circle using a cutoff band saw. In this case the actual cutoff was slightly above the center of the radius which required a little filing to make sure the two drive dog arms did not bare against the fixture. I drilled two holes for 1/4-20 bolts for use as a stop in the vice. To drive out the pin, it took about a dozen sharp hits to move the pin a noticeable distance then another 30 or so light taps all with a 12 oz hammer.
The distributor seal replacement was per John Sargent's great instructions found in the FAQ. If you rebuild one of these just make a note of the orientation of the offset on the drive dog in relation of the key way for the rotor in the shaft, otherwise you will have to stop, think, and figure out you have to find top dead center to get the drive dog orientation correct. Another tip, during reassembly, make sure the pin is perfectly centered (by eye) in the drive dog otherwise it won't fit into cam. You don't have to ask me how I know these things. Also don't forget to oil the sleeve bearing and the shims during reassembly. The oil seal and two O-rings are available from FCPGroton.com for $3.00.
For those of you without a 3000 watt laser cutter or a milling machine in the corner of the garage, a distributor fixture is available per the FAQ: John Vilas, Vilas Motor Works, 901 S. Texas Avenue, Bryan, TX 77803-4554 Cost is $25 (at 6/6/00).
Please excuse the lousy backdrop.
