Fixed 'Engine/Tranny shudder' –– Exposing a Consistent, RPM-Related, Vibration


This is my first 940. Got it last March. It had an idling vibration that became a shudder when going from Neutral to R or P. This was slightly reduced by new motor and tranny mounts, then finally cured by "modifying" the broken tran-to-exhaust bracket. I don't think this vibration is new, but was just waiting to be noticed.

It feels like it's there all the time — barely noticeable at idle, but building as RPMs go up, peaking at about 2750 +/- 100, then fading away again by 3000. Loose change in the console tray often chimes in at the peak RPM.

It does it in Neutral, and can also be felt in the pedal at all road speeds, again peaking between 2500 and 3000 RPM. (Reminds me of aggressive tread tire "buzz" except for the fact it's also there at idle and is RPM sensitive.)

Could this be EOHBS (Early Onset Harmonic Balancer Syndrome)? I checked with timing light and it was OK a week ago. Guess I'll recheck it and do a compression test too.
