960 flex plate? 900 1995

My 1995 964 has a noise that sounds as if the engine is coming apart. My first impression of the sharp high pitch wrapping, was that it came from the valve train. Listening with a stethoscope lead me to the bell housing. Compression and valve timing are ok. I’ve disabled cylinders and removed the serpentine belt, with no effect on the noise. Does anyone have any experience with a broken flex (a.k.a. carrier, drive) plate on the B6304 engine?
