Two days ago either the clutch on my 240's air conditioning compressor or the compressor itself seized. I suspect the latter. The drive belt from the engine burned in half, so I second the suggestions from board about carrying a fire extinguisher in the car. I resorted to using a pair of pliers to physically remove the burning belt. The compressor clutch pulley also drives the power steering pump, so I am now driving the car without the benefit of power steering while I proceed with repairs.
What are my compressor options? While I haven't removed it yet, I assume my existing compressor is a Diesel Kiki. One user mentioned the possibility of using a Seltec compressor. Are these units reliable? What model would I need? What about Sanden?
I will have the system evacuated tomorrow. As a point of idle interest, how much should I expect to pay for this service, and will the shop pay me for my R-12 (yeah, right)? I will check the compressor for black death and do a 134a conversion using the Volvo kit. Wish me luck!
You folks on Brickboard are the best, bar none. For the record, I religiously patronize sponsors of the 'Board for all my Volvo needs ('bout $1.5k and counting for two 240s), even if it costs a little extra.
