AT tailshaft seal leaking ATF 200 1989

I have fluid (looks like ATF) leaking from the tranny tailshaft seal.
After reading the FAQs, it appears that the seal goes as the bushing wears.
I already have the kit containing bushing, seal, and housing gasket.

I have no apparent rumbling, knocking, or vibrating. The car is dead quiet as it has always been.

Question: If I hand shake the tailshaft (holy cow sounds funny) and feel no apparent major play, can I temporarily get away with changing only the seal? I am suggesting this since I assume it can be changed without removal of the housing and fluid and hence less work (I have limited time on my hands).

Any experiences? Opinions? Am I correct to assume that the seal is accessible with the housing still on the tranny? I've never been there... Can I even do it without removing the tranny crossmember?

Let me know, thanks!
