While rotating tires I noticed my rear pads were on the outs, so I ordered a new set. Curious to see that the OEM pad was available for about the same cost as the others. Even better discovering the OEM pads include shims in the package.
Just finished the job and everything went fine. Here is the question. The pads actually came with what appeared to be two sets of shims. Plain old steel shims (4) and another set (4) coated with a rubberized material on both surfaces.
On closer inspection the rear shims I reused last time with the PBR pads had a sandwich shim of some sort. I discarded the old shim sandwich and I used both sets of the new shims, using the steel shim against the piston side and the other right next to it against the pad.
Did I do this right?
The PBR pads lasted about 40k miles. The OEM pad feels better to me too.
Also, why does the OEM manufacturer chamfer the edge of the friction material?
