I'm running into an interesting problem replacing an in tank pump on my 1989 744.

I was expecting a fuel sending unit with two lines, one for feed and one for return, and an electrical connector, with a float device on the end of a arm, and the pump suspended from the bottom. What I found was a unit that also includes the tank fill tube, an evap hose, and a plastic tube float contraption that runs down at an angle from the filler hose connection. There is a plastic mounting bracket that attaches near the bottom of the float housing, into which the pump slides. Or would, if my aftermarket pump were the same diameter as the now useless VDO (Original??) pump. It is a tad larger. Won't fit.

The replacement unit that gets returned tomorrow is a Carter, sold in a NAPA box, and Carter's website verifies that this PN should fit. It doesn't but I suspect that it would fit the less crowded arrangement that doesn't have the filler opening, the evap hose connector and the enclosed float/sender.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of sending unit/pump arrangement, and can recommend a replacement pump that will fit?
