Passing wire through firewall? 900 1994

I am installing an amp on my 1994 960 and need to pass a wire through the firewall. I Have already tried putting the wire through the rubber "nipple housing" that is on the passenger side. I cut off a blank end of the rubber housing and put the wire through it, however I could not find the wire on the inside of the car!/!?!
Can somebody help me? There is a huge black plastic thing in the way under the passenger's side dash in the way. How have other people passed their power wires through the firewall?
