temp gauge going crazy 200

Hey all, just started up my 88 240 wagon and within five minutes the temp gauge climbed up into the red zone. I turned on the heater, then finally pulled over. No boil over, overflow tank at normal, fan working, hoses and belts fine. Didn't seem to affect the running.
I waited a bit, then started it back up, same thing. So I chanced driving it to a garage, but on the way, the gauge suddenly fell all the way down and bottomed out. I thought, this is odd. Then after a couple more miles, it moved back up into its normal position, about half way.
Went out and drove it again, and now its staying at the 2/3 mark before the red zone. Do I have something seriously wrong, or is this a thermostat problem or something? Anybody have this same experience?
