Mystery Hose in '89 240DL 200

I've been having some rough starting problems which I think are probably related to a fuel filter that has never been changed in 230K miles. While checking the engine I noticed a hose that is not connected to anything, and I can't for the life of me figure out where it goes. I've put a picture up on my website of the engine and hose. I'd appreciate any help in figuring out where it belongs. Both The Bentley and Hayes manuals haven't helped.
