Interchanging aw transmissions - 83- to 90? Or scrap the 240! 200 1990

Having trouble finding a decently priced used aw70 for the 90 240 wagon. I have a friend with an aw70 out of a 83-84 240. Can I change the bell housing to accomodate the speed sensor notch and change out the speedo differences? This one has 216K , but the engine sounds good and it runs well when the trans works correctly.

I keep getting quotes of $575 for a used trans with 150K. I thought the higher mileage aw70s could be bought in the $175 to $250 range. If the trans had 70-80K I could see a higher price. I got quoted $2500 to rebuild the current one. I can buy a nice 240 on ebay for that price. Hell I just paid $3600 for my 95 850 - why would anyone rebuild a trans these days?

Anyone out there bought a used 240 or 740 trans recently! I am condidering just stripping this car of the $600 worth of parts I bought and calling it a day. It's almost cheaper to buy another 240. Only paid $450 for it at a goodwill auction (they did not disclose the trans problem). It realistically was a $75 car, but one idiot showed up to bid and raised it to $450. My sister bought it and I told her not to go over $200.

Plus, I get a kick in the pants for not trying to run it without fixing other problems first.
