do i need premium gasoline.... 700

Do I need to use high octane gasoline? I've never owned an older car before(1988 740 GLE Wagon) and I've recently been told that older cars must have at least 89 octane. Will I start having engine problems,since I've been using regular for the week I have been driving my "new" car?
