Alternator Belts 700 1989

First I must say thanks to fellow Brickboards and its excellent FAQ. Just did my alternator bushings and Voltage regulator. Brushes was less than 5 mm! Lucky I did it. Now no belt squeal and headlights suprisingly much brighter.

Now a simple question - why did Volvo design their alternators to use 2 belts? I've noticed other cars (Japanese) have only a 1 belt design. Is it as a safety measure in case one breaks?
