240 door handle - complicated question

Hello all,

The Brickboard has a lot of posts and information on how to replace a broken exterior door handle. I was in the process of fixing this problem on the driver door of my '89 245, when the problem took a twist: the little rod that has the little spring on it that attaches to the back of the handle fell off. I have no idea how to fit it back into where ever it came from.

Please be specific - I really appreciate any guidance.
