Fuel gauge malfunctioning 85' 740GL 700

I have recently bought a used 85' 740GL. It has a quite annoying problem. The fuel gauge works perfectly as long as the tank is half-full or more. But as soon as it reaches half-tank it starts jumping wildly up and down, sometimes stabilizing at full tank.

Any help would be apreciated.
