battery light on in 88 240 ? 200

hi
i have read the archves about this and learned a few things, but ive never seen this before (dozens of b230 volvos)...usually, ALL the idiot lights come on, screaming "Replace the alternator!" at least thats the way our mechanic always solved it.

what is it supossed to mean when just the battery light comes on...and gets dimmer with higher revs ? it had been on for a short time two days last week, but now its on all the time...tried other batteries in there, same thing.
