backfiring, rich fuel mix after very dead battery replacement 700 1992

92 non turbo wouldn't start. battery was so dead, it would not take a charge. Replaced battery, (washed engine/probably BIG mistake) now, if I can get it to start "at all", it pops and rumbles and sounds like only 3 cyls working. Checked plugs, very smelly/grimy, cleaned, but still no luck. Any quick fixes advisable or do I call the "tow"?
