Wiper motor woes. 200 1989

Windshield wiper motor has died in my '89 240 DL wagon. Had a little time to remove it this weekend and found it a real hassle. Felt incredibly inept when I couldn't get the thing out! Gave up on it mostly due to lack of time. Is there a trick to this thing or am I just missing something really simple. Thank God for Rain-X.
